Rooted in hospitality

A house with a remarkable past.

Built beside the old road between Reading and Easton, the building has served generations of guests as a tavern, hotel, restaurant, gathering place, and now a winery.

Its names and uses have changed, but its purpose has remained wonderfully familiar: bringing people together.

The history of the house

Nearly 300 years of stories

From the Levan family to the Kemps and the many chapters that followed, every generation left its mark on these walls.

From stone house to Levan Tavern

Daniel Levan built the house around 1740 beside the busy highway connecting Reading and Easton. As traffic increased, he enlarged the home around 1765 and opened what became known as the Levan Tavern—said to be the oldest hotel in eastern Berks County.

A traveler’s account

During the Revolutionary War, John Adams recorded a journey through the area and a stop at a German tavern about 18 miles from Reading—an account long associated with this historic property.

The Kemp family chapter

After Daniel Levan’s death, the property passed through the family. In 1788 it came to his daughter Susana and her husband, Captain George Kemp. Two datestones on the façade bear their names and the year 1795.

They renamed it Kemp’s Hotel and operated it for the next 52 years.

Two centuries in the family

The hotel remained open until 1852, while the property stayed with the Kemp family for roughly two centuries. It was sold in 1989 and later became Whispering Springs and Season’s Grille.

Restored for a new era

After years of sitting vacant, the building was purchased and renovated in 2013. The work brought it up to modern standards while preserving the colonial architecture. It reopened as The Yoga House and Nectar’s Café & Juice Bar and remained open through 2019.

The present chapter · 2023

The tradition continues.

Malachi and Kelly Duffy purchased the property in June 2023. Today, the historic house carries on its long tradition of hospitality as Vintage House Winery—a place to gather, discover a favorite wine, and become part of the story.
